This recreational area in the Apalachicola National Forest is officially called Trout Pond GF&A Trailhead. The Trout Pond part is a picnic area with a small fishing pier. The GF&A Trailhead is a rails to trails project that is very short due to opposition from people in the immediate area. Part of this wide paved trail passes through a long leaf pine and wiregrass environment that is being restored to its natural state. The other part runs parallel to Springhill Rd and was in the past the Georgia Florida and Alabama railroad. The trail is only 2.5 miles but it's still quite picturesque. It can be used for cycling, walking, jogging or taking your dog for a walk. It is nice in part because it is not well utilized. It is not uncommon to have the entire trail to yourself. There are bathrooms, potable water, picnic tables and ample parking. Hopefully this trail will eventually be continued down to Carrabelle and be similar to the nearby Saint Marks bike trail.

Someone killed an alligator that was stinking up the whole place. Trash every where and fishing bobers and line every where. Can tell no one goes there and cleans up

This place hasn't been kept up, I took my puppy down there and I have to say it freaked both of us out! Fresh bear poop everywhere.
About Trout Pond
Nestled within the tranquil embrace of Apalachicola National Forest, Trout Pond offers a serene getaway for those seeking a natural retreat. Officially known as the Trout Pond GF&A Trailhead, this area serves as both a recreational haven and a historical landmark. Though modest in size, the picnic area at Trout Pond is graced with a small fishing pier that invites anglers and nature enthusiasts alike. Adjacent to the pond lies the GF&A Trail, a vestige of the Georgia Florida and Alabama railroad, now a wide paved path just 2.5 miles long. This trail, while short, promises invigorating walks, jogs, or bike rides through a landscape characterized by longleaf pines and wiregrass. It's a journey steeped in serenity, frequently allowing visitors the luxury of solitude. However, the trail does have its own tales to tell, from the ever-present bear tracks to the remnants of a historically rich past. Despite its underutilization, this area offers amenities such as bathrooms, potable water, picnic tables, and ample parking. As efforts continue to restore the natural environment and possibly extend the trail, visitors are encouraged to respect the natural habitat and help maintain its pristine condition. Whether you're here for a peaceful stroll or a quiet day by the pond, Trout Pond holds a simple charm that's hard to resist. Trout Pond may have its quirks and requires a bit of upkeep, but its runaway beauty and potential as a hidden gem make it an intriguing destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
