Beautiful little lake right in the middle of Golden Gate park. There’s the Portals of the Past archway on one side of the lake, and a little path over a (sometimes running) waterfall on the other.

Visited this beautiful spot because it was visited in 1912 by Abdu'l-Bahá Abbas, son of Bahá'u'llah, prophet-founder of the Bahá'Í Faith. The pillars, known as "Portals of the Past", are all that remained of one of San Francisco's mansions following the 1906 earthquake and fire. The lawn beyond the shrubbery on the far side of the lake is a lovely, quiet spot for a picnic. We saw four red-tailed hawks circling in the sky above.

The area is equipped with trails perfect for a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk with your dog. One of the lake's most fascinating features is the "Portals of the Past," a hauntingly beautiful archway that stands as a reminder of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Originally part of a Nob Hill mansion that was destroyed in the disaster, these white pillars now serve as a historical monument and a testament to the city's resilience. Moreover, the spot is enriched by the fact that it was visited in 1912 by Abdu'l-Bahá Abbas, an eminent figure in the Bahá'Í Faith. For those seeking solace, the lawn situated beyond the shrubbery on the lake's far side offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can enjoy a quiet picnic. The presence of red-tailed hawks soaring above adds a touch of natural majesty to the experience.
