This weekend we camped at Camp Far West North Shore. We had site 17 which was about 40 yards from the water. It was slightly graded down towards the lake but the location of the campsite was nice overall. People stay up late and are loud occasionally but that’s part of camping. The bathrooms were about 50 yards up the hill. They need to install soap dispensers and there aren’t showers. Don’t let the baby frogs jump out at you while you sit on the toilet, you might drop a little extra. The water was really nice but there are so many rocks and no sandy beach areas. A few of us hurt our feet on the sharp rocks underwater and going to and from the water. Swim/water shoes are mandatory. Anytime is a good time to swim, I heard other campers swimming around 1 am. The mini store is really close by just Incase you forget something and they are open till 12 am.

Camp Far west has been a place I have been visiting since the early 70s .I have always enjoyed the summers boating but as from the photos I'm sharing you can see it's not the place I remembered as a kid in the early 70s

About Camp Far West Reservoir
Nestled among the rolling hills of California's Sierra Nevada foothills, Camp Far West Reservoir offers an outdoor adventure haven that appeals to those seeking a rugged camping experience. Historically known for its serene environment and vibrant water activities, the lake today faces challenges with low water levels and management issues that have particularly impacted long-time visitors. The reservoir, though lower than years past, remains a popular site for boating, swimming, and fishing, offering plenty of outdoor fun. Camp Far West is well-known for its expansive campgrounds, such as the North Shore camping area where sites may slope slightly down toward the water, bringing campers close to nature. However, guests are advised to come prepared with water shoes due to the rocky lakebed characteristic of the swimming areas, as these could pose a risk to unprotected feet. Visitors to Camp Far West should ensure they stock all essentials—while a small store is available, its hours and supplies can be unpredictable. Restroom facilities are basic, lacking showers and soap dispensers, so plan accordingly. Expect robust outdoor activity at Camp Far West—late-night swims are common, and the lake is known for substantial fish populations. Those keen on water sports like jet skiing will find plenty of opportunity here, even as water levels have reduced the lake's expanse. While the area provides many positive adventures, recent visitors have reported concerns over management and enforcement behavior, suggesting careful consideration if these issues might impact your visit. In sum, Camp Far West is ideal for those seeking authentic camping and recreational lake experiences, overlooking some of its growing pains, and appreciating it as a link to nostalgic summer adventures.
