This is a beautiful place to backpack. There are several established, dispersed campsites around the lake, however they are almost all for small, one-person tents.

Gorgeous hike and a peaceful place to camp. Not too many good spots right by the lake but there are decent options. A bit strenuous to get to but a doable hike for a first time backpacker (this was my first trip).

Excellent camping and swimming and the water especially after a great rain season is coooold and fantastic. However, I can see that the camping could be a bit annoying since it gets windy around the lake. There are a couple of V like funnels that funnel wind and noise around the lake but there are protected camping spaces which are really quite nice.

Hands down one of the best high-Sierras hikes. Did it once in Boy Scouts and I was hooked. Been back several times since. You can stop at any number of the beautiful lakes along the way, and even continue past Penner if you're up for a longer hike. It's about 3.5 miles to Penner from the trailhead. The hike is downhill most of the way in, but the final stretch to the lake is uphill. Of course, that means most of the way out is uphill. Great for dogs as well, but they're supposed to be kept on a leash.
