One of my favourite Bay Area hikes is the trail up to Cataract Falls. Beautiful and situated "behind" Mt. Tamalpais. Not many tourists will make their way back here. Go on a weekday to avoid the crowds and especially if your driving as there can be packs of cyclists (that honestly make me nervous when maneuvering around).
About Alpine Lake
Nestled within the picturesque landscape of Marin County, just behind the majestic Mt. Tamalpais, lies the serene Alpine Lake. Covering 224-acres, this historical reservoir offers an idyllic escape into nature, where quiet recrudesce seamlessly blends with the adventurer's playground. The lake is renowned not just for its tranquil vistas and reflective waters, ideal for leisurely fishing of bass and trout, but also for its proximity to the majestic Cataract Falls. The hike to the falls is amongst the favorites of Bay Area explorers – the trail, though steep with numerous stairs and switchbacks, rewards with breathtaking views and solitude. Although the journey can be challenging, it enriches the soul, offering an exquisite disconnect through its absence of cell service, cocooning visitors in the natural beauty surrounding them. The drive to Alpine Lake itself can be an adventure, especially for avid motorcyclists who relish its windy roads. However, for those driving traditional vehicles, caution is advised due to the narrow, cyclist-frequented paths. Weekdays see fewer crowds, offering a peaceful retreat and a fuller exploration opportunity. Upon reaching the lake, visitors will find ample amenities to cater to a stress-free stay, including overflow parking, potable toilets, and recycling facilities, ensuring their experience is both comfortable and environmentally considerate. Alpine Lake is not just a destination; it's a pristine journey into nature's lap, a place that beckons those yearning for tranquility, breathtaking hikes, and rejuvenating escapes from the hustle and bustle of the everyday world.
