Love coming to this lake! It is out of the way making it less busy than some of the other nearby lakes. Also, since there is no lakeside camping, it helps keep it less crowded. The area is in the high juniper flats north of the ponderosa tree line and gets pretty windy. There is lots of wildlife and the fishing isn't bad for stocked trout, catfish and crayfish. Fishing from shore is decent but a small boat is ideal. There is a picnic area with tables and a restroom that is open during the summer season. It is closed during the winter. The dirt road to the lake is passable in a passenger car but any wet or snowy weather will make it virtually impossible unless you are in a 4x4. Overall, a great place to get away and enjoy a slightly different view of the Arizona high country.

Way out boyond knowhere. Lots of rocks. Frozen over in az, can you believe that? Shallow. Saw a picnicking table, some camping areas. Bring your own shade, the trees are not big!

The Coconino National Forest is beautiful this time of year. Gorgeous monsoon thunderstorms, gamboling elk, herds of free ranging cattle, and there's actually water in several of the lakes. The off road trails are reasonably maintained, although some are definitely jeep trails like FR 124. It's important to note that there's no overnight camping in the Kinnikinik Lake area. There are day use picnic tables and a pit toilet though. Dispersed camping before the lake is allowed.
About Kinnikinick Lake
Nestled in the high juniper flats of Arizona, Kinnikinick Lake offers a quintessential escape from the hustle and bustle of more trafficked locales in the Coconino National Forest. This remote treasure, situated north of the ponderosa line, is known for its tranquil beauty, despite the persistent winds that sweep across its landscape. Kinnikinick Lake is shallow, and during the colder months, it's astonishingly frozen over, a rare sight in Arizona. It's not uncommon to encounter picnicking families, adventurers in off-road vehicles, or herds of elk grazing in the distance. Fishing at Kinnikinick Lake is a rewarding endeavor, with ample opportunities to catch stocked trout, catfish, and crayfish, particularly if you have access to a small boat. Shore fishing is also productive for those without watercraft. Despite the rugged approach on dirt tracks, accessible by 4x4 in wet conditions, the pristine lakeside rewards visitors with its serenity. The facilities include a picnic area complete with tables and a pit toilet, however, overnight camping is not an option directly at the lake. Dispersed camping is available before reaching the lake, offering visitors a chance to truly immerse themselves in nature. While the area can see significant visitor impact, particularly in terms of litter in certain areas, the natural beauty and the greeting of wildlife continue to allure return visitors. For outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to disconnect in the rugged Arizona high country, Kinnikinick Lake is an exceptional choice—with a touch of adventure and a necessary reminder to pack out what you bring in.
