There's a kayak trail that goes from the Neches River to Pine Island Bayou, then juts off to Cooks Lake, then Scatterman Lake and links back up with the Neches River again. It begins with a short upstream paddle, but the paddling gets easier when you get into the Pine Island Bayou. After that it's mainly sight seeing as you maneuver your kayak between the trees down the kayak trail and then opens up to Scatterman Lake. The ride back to the Saltwater Barrier is nice and relaxing as it's all downstream on the Neches River. You put your kayak in at the boat ramps on the North side of the Saltwater Barrier. There is parking there and the restrooms are open during the daylight hours. It's also free to launch and park.
